Abscence – Enigma
Releases on Sept 12 via Wormholedeath Records.
Abscence’s debut full length Enigma is not merely an album, it’s an immersive experience. Across nine expansive compositions, the Yorkshire based quartet delivers a gothic black metal opera that combines atmosphere, storytelling, and sheer musical ambition in a way that feels both rooted in tradition and forward looking.
Thematically, Enigma chronicles the immortal and tragic love of two vampire women, exploring devotion, betrayal, and eternity under the cloak of moonlight. Rather than treating this narrative as a gimmick, Abscence weave it seamlessly into the music, allowing each track to unfold like a chapter in a dark novel.
The album opens with “We Abandon Worldly Pearls,” a sweeping introduction that immediately sets the tone with mournful guitar layers and symphonic depth. It is both cinematic and raw, establishing the dual nature of the record — grandeur without losing black metal ferocity. “Under Moon’s Glance” follows with a more introspective pace, built around Morrigan’s sorrowful clean vocals, which drift across bleak tremolo riffs like a voice calling from another realm. Later, the title track “Enigma” fuses blast driven aggression with soaring melodic passages, embodying the tension between beauty and violence that defines the record.

One of the standout moments arrives with “Silk & Shadows,” a track that leans heavily into gothic atmosphere, pairing whispered passages with crushing guitar surges that feel as intimate as they are overwhelming. Closing chapter “Our Love Ignites” pushes the emotional arc to its height, a furious yet haunting conclusion that feels both tragic and triumphant, the perfect culmination of the narrative.
Musically, the band excel in balance. Mordred’s piercing, theatrical vocal delivery contrasts sharply with Morrigan’s spectral voice, while Balor’s layered guitar arrangements and Gawain’s symphonic vision create the record’s cinematic weight. The interplay of these elements prevents the album from ever falling into excess, every movement feels deliberate.
What sets Enigma apart is its refusal to conform to modern industry trends of brevity and simplicity. These are long form compositions, deliberately crafted to transport the listener into a conceptual world. Enigma is an unapologetically ambitious debut — immersive, authentic, and utterly absorbing. Abscence have positioned themselves as a formidable new voice in the black/gothic metal landscape, and this record demands attention.
