We chat with HELLO ENEMY about their latest EP release “That Goes On There”!
You’ve called this album a release of years of frustration and grind - what finally pushed you over the edge into ‘fuck it, let’s make a full record’ mode?
“In the end it was a natural progression. We had started out slow with a few singles, developed a process and coped with some lineup changes (we were a five-piece, now three). The songwriting has matured as we found our style - you can see this evolution from our earliest singles. It reached a point where we were just ready to make an album to show what we can do.”
Grunge revival with an Aussie bite is bloody spot-on. What’s it about this sound, thick riffs, raw lyrics, zero polish - that still hits so hard in 2025?
“There are so many styles out there now. But despite all the technology and polish applied to so many styles of modern music, there is definitely something timeless about a band playing guitar, bass and drums. It’s real and people feel it. There’s also that element of nostalgia for children of the 90’s, because they are running the world now…”

‘A Lot Like You’ punches hard, lyrically and sonically. What’s the story behind that one? Who were you staring at in the mirror when it came together?
“A Lot Like You was a dream to write, one of those tunes that pretty much wrote itself! Dan brought us a Bass Riff with some guitar parts, the melody and lyric came together in around 2 hours. Initially it started out as something of an unrequited love song, but morphed more of an exploration of self image and shadow work after Dan sent through the verse melody and Lyric, and he hadn’t heard the first vocal draft by then!”
There’s a real working-class honesty in this album, no bullshit, no filter. How much of that comes from your personal day to day lives?
“Of course, our personalities and experiences are reflected in the music we create. We aren’t trying to be something we aren’t. There’s plenty of inspiration out there for three dads living their lives in 2025.”

You’ve done 15 Indie singles, landed US airplay, and kept it DIY the whole way. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from flying solo this far?
“Yeah we are proud of all that we have done so far, with close to zero budget and learning as we go. The biggest lesson - that it takes time and effort in so many aspects of the process these days, or it won’t be heard. You can’t just write a song, you need to be part of the broader ecosystem, going to gigs, getting to know people, putting time into social media. If only we could get a label to rent us a holiday house on the beach for a month and say ‘here guys, go write some songs and we’ll take care of the rest!’”

Now that That Goes On There is out in the wild, what do you want people to feel when they hit play?
“Something, anything! People will feel what they feel. It’s a personal thing based on their own situation, but there’s got to be some kind of connection when they are listening. It can be as simple as liking a guitar riff, or a deeper connection with some of our lyrics.”
