Zeolite – L’Appel du Vide
Melbourne’s Zeolite have dropped a slab of sonic violence called L’Appel du Vide - which is French for “the urge to fling yourself off a cliff,” and honestly, after hearing this thing, you might just do it, but in the best possible way.
Right off the bat, “Penitence” boots the door in like a pissed off tradie who found out you touched his smoko. It’s tight, furious, and technically ruthless, the kind of opening track that makes you question whether your speaker cones are still attached or halfway across the room.
The middle stretch is where things get properly filthy. “Hellion” and “Effulgent Death” deliver slabs of death metal carnage laced with deathcore groove, all wrapped in a production job sharper than a Centrelink worker’s patience on a Monday morning. The riffwork is obscene, the drumming’s tighter than your mate who “forgot his wallet again,” and the vocals sound like Satan gargling gravel after a bender.
But it’s not just a one note bludgeoning. “Impetus” and “Oozing Black” sneak in some sly melodic ideas and atmospheric tension that show Zeolite aren’t just here to cave your skull in - they want you to feel something while they do it. “Stygian” in particular drips with menace, a slow burning crusher that proves the band knows how to wield restraint like a weapon.
By the time “Apparition” and “Knell” roll around, it’s clear Zeolite have bigger ambitions than just being the heaviest band in the room. These tracks are massive, layered, and carry just enough progressive flair to hint at even more potential down the line.
L’Appel du Vide isn’t just a heavy record - it’s an emotional sledgehammer with surgical precision. It won’t hold your hand, it’ll break your legs and drag you through ten tracks of beautifully orchestrated despair. And you’ll thank it afterwards, like a sick bastard.
