Void Matter – “Metamorphosis”
Brisbane metalcore outfit Void Matter have delivered their most refined and emotionally-charged release yet with “Metamorphosis” - a six track journey through addiction, self loathing, and transformation that hits hard both sonically and thematically.
Opening track “Apathy” sets the tone with a crushing blend of low end riffs, rapid fire double kicks, and a chorus that digs into your brain like an overdue regret. It’s a bleak yet beautifully executed dive into cycles of addiction, walking the fine line between nihilism and hope. It’s brutal, but so bloody catchy it almost feels illegal.

Then comes “Hate”, and yep, it’s as nasty as the title suggests. This is Void Matter at full tilt - thrashing double kicks, throat shredding screams, and guitars that sound like they’re actively trying to pick a fight. There’s not much subtlety here, but who needs subtlety when you’re kicking doors off hinges?

“Hollow” offers a moment of contrast - a haunting balance between aggression and atmosphere. It shows off the band’s dynamic range, with layered clean vocals and melancholic melodies giving way to a punishing mid section. It’s like old school Architects got stuck in a modern day Aussie thunderstorm with Fit For A King/Miss May I and loved every second of it.
“Disintegrate” is where the band starts pulling you into deeper emotional waters. Melodic and brooding, but still hard hitting, it’s a track about falling apart under the weight of change. The clean vocals here shine, balanced perfectly with a rhythm section that pounds like a sledgehammer on concrete. It’s heavy without being try hard - more like a sonic therapy session that ends in a headbang.
With “Suffocate”, Void Matter tackles substance abuse with a sense of grace and grit. Slow-building and emotionally raw, it’s a fitting near end track to an EP that’s as thoughtful as it is thumping.

The title track and closer on this monstrous EP, “Metamorphosis” is a standout. Electronics shimmer beneath groove-heavy riffs, leading into an explosive chorus and a breakdown that’ll knock your jocks off. It’s the sound of a band levelling up, plain and simple.
