The World Is Not Round — Nightmare Fuel

Sydney’s The World Is Not Round have dropped Nightmare Fuel, and bloody hell, it’s one hell of a sugar coated gut punch. On the surface, it’s a ridiculously catchy pop punk banger — all bright hooks, driving guitars, and a chorus that’ll worm its way into your skull faster than a bad hangover. You could chuck this on at a BBQ, and half the crowd would be bouncing along without clocking that the lyrics are basically a therapy session set to power chords.

Beneath the infectious riffs and shout alongs lies something a lot darker, a raw, gut twisting look at toxic relationships and the head messing manipulation that comes with them. The “Wake me up now” hook isn’t just a fun bit to scream in the car, it’s a desperate howl to snap out of the emotional quicksand. That’s the sneaky genius here, you can dance your arse off while quietly getting your heart stomped on.

Sonically, it’s punchy as hell. The guitars are bright but bitey, the drums don’t just keep time, they drive the whole bloody thing like they’re late for work, and the vocals walk that perfect line between vulnerability and “stuff it, I’m done with your crap.” It’s pop punk with a brain and a backbone, and it manages to be fun without being fluff.

Nightmare Fuel is the musical equivalent of smiling through gritted teeth while giving the middle finger. Hooky as all hell, emotionally loaded, and guaranteed to get stuck in your head for days. If this is the band’s “darker turn,” I say bring on the bloody night.
