MÄNTRÄSeverance

MÄNTRÄ have kicked the stoner fuzz to the curb and emerged from the Adelaide undergrowth with Severance - a five track emo rock belter that feels like a big sad cuddle followed by a cheeky punch to the guts. It’s the sound of late nights, missed calls, and questionable decisions made under streetlights.

Opening with Proceeds The Temptress, the EP starts off like a drunk text you definitely shouldn’t have sent - moody, tense, and crawling with regret. The guitars shimmer with that classic 2000s emo energy, and frontman Luke Chaplin wastes no time bleeding into the mic like his ex is still reading his lyrics.

Second track Dollar Store Jäger hits with a bit more swagger - a slightly cheekier number for those nights when you’re sad but also kind of a menace. It’s the EP’s rough edged singalong moment, and yeah, we’ve all drunk something we regret at 3am, so the title slaps too.

Queen of Misery, the lead single, sits right in the emotional pocket - big choruses, bigger feelings, and a riff that begs to be played with your eyes closed and heart wide open. It’s polished without losing any grit, atuned to someone crying in an alley but still lighting your ciggie.

Built To Fall slows things down just enough to get you thinking about the last three people who broke your heart. It’s introspective without being wanky - a hard line to walk in the emo game, and MÄNTRÄ bloody nail it.

Finally, Beauty Scars brings it home, a slow burning, melancholic closer that feels like the sonic equivalent of re-reading old messages you swear you deleted. It’s delicate, bruised, and honest in all the best ways.

Severance is a sharp, emotionally raw debut EP that proves MÄNTRÄ aren’t just another pack of sad bastards - they’re our sad bastards. And they’re only just getting started.

For fans of feelings, eyeliner, and singing your lungs out in traffic. Severance is out now.
