SURF SHOP COPS“WEIRD ENERGY”

Perth’s indie surf rock legends Surf Shop Cops are back at it with Weird Energy - their most infectious and self aware release to date. It’s a three minute masterclass in scrappy charm, jangly guitars and shout along choruses, wrapped in the kind of awkward charisma that only three WA lads with day jobs and a dodgy van can deliver.

Drawing comparisons to Philadelphia Grand Jury and early Smith Street Band, Weird Energy captures that unmistakably Australian sound - part pub gig, part house party, part existential crisis on a sticky pub dance floor. It’s got the kind of chorus that lodges itself deep in your brain like an overdue power bill, and guitar work that rewards repeat listens, each little lick and riff revealing itself like a weird bruise you forgot you got at last weekend’s show.

Lyrically, it’s both a piss take and a painfully honest reflection. The song skewers the humblebragging and clout chasing that plagues every city music scene, before turning the mirror inward with the kind of self deprecating humour that makes you wince and laugh at the same time. Produced by Ron Pollard, the track is polished just enough to shine without sanding off the edges that make SSC so uniquely them.

With Weird Energy, Surf Shop Cops have delivered a track that’s equal parts catchy, clever and full of personality - the kind of song that makes you want to jump around in a crowded room, spill your beer, and hug your mates while yelling the chorus at full volume.
