Runnner “Get Real Sleep”
LA’s Runnner (aka Noah Weinman) is back with a new single called “Get Real Sleep,” and it’s exactly what you’d expect from someone who’s spent way too much time horizontal after blowing out their Achilles playing pickup basketball – introspective as hell, full of existential dread, and somehow still catchy enough to hum through a mental breakdown.
“Get Real Sleep” is the latest taste of his upcoming LP A Welcome Kind of Weakness (out August 29 via Run For Cover Records & Civilians), and it’s the kind of song you chuck on when you’re lying awake at 3am thinking about every dumb thing you’ve ever said since Year 9. It’s hypnotic and slightly frantic – like the bastard child of Bon Iver and a panic attack.
Weinman reckons the song is about the strange idea of “real sleep” vs. the fake kind, and he’s bloody nailed that feeling of lying in bed with your thoughts trying to fistfight each other. It’s dreamy, it’s messy, and it kind of feels like a warm hug from someone who’s also crying. That balance of floaty atmosphere and emotional gut-punch is classic Runnner, but now polished up in full studio fidelity instead of sounding like it was recorded in a bathtub.
This whole upcoming album is shaped by injury, heartbreak, and a complete life detour – which, let’s be honest, is the holy trinity of indie bangers. Weinman’s clearly been through the emotional meat grinder, but instead of whining, he’s turned the chaos into a beautifully produced alt-rock record that’ll make you want to weep into your beer.
“Get Real Sleep” is streaming everywhere now. Go chuck it on, cry in the shower, and tell your mates it’s hayfever.
