Deaf Havana“Hurts To Be Lonely” (Single Review)

From the upcoming album We’re Never Getting Out (out October 3 via SO Recordings/Civilians)

Deaf Havana have dropped “Hurts To Be Lonely”, the latest gut punch single from their upcoming album We’re Never Getting Out, and hell, it’s a raw one. This isn’t your stock standard emo ballad, this is the kind of track that feels like ripping open your ribcage with a rusty spoon and letting the world stare at your sorry heart. It’s bleak, beautiful, and brutally honest.

Frontman James Veck-Gilodi sounds like a bloke who’s seen the edge, leaned over it, and told it to fuck right off. The track is drenched in self-destruction - lying about sobriety, hiding addictions, and isolating yourself until even your dog’s ready to pack up and leave. It’s the sound of a man singing from the backseat of a life that’s been swerving between breakdowns and breakthroughs since day dot.

Musically, it’s deceptively polished - layered guitars shimmer behind melancholy melodies, while James’ vocals stay front and centre, as vulnerable as a hungover confession at 3am. It’s sad as shit but catchy enough that you’ll be humming it while pretending everything’s fine at your cousin’s wedding.

A bit about the album - We’re Never Getting Out is shaping up to be a proper emotional clusterfuck, with James binning a whole record, ending a marriage, and finally owning his own demons. Big moves from a bloke who’s probably spent half his life trying to please everyone but himself. Fair play.

If “Hurts To Be Lonely” is anything to go by, this album’s gonna be equal parts therapy session and sonic gut-punch. It hurts, sure - but it hurts good. Like a breakup wank. Grim, but necessary.

FFO: Bon Iver with a drinking problem, Weezer on antidepressants, and Bruce Springsteen if he cried in the shower more.
